The original small kitchen lacked storage, poor craftsmanship, outdated appliances, dim lighting and no place to gather and share a meal. These homeowners even resorted to storing dishes in the dishwasher, so maximizing storage and optemizing space were paramount. However, expending the kitchen was constrained due to the dining room and stairs in either side.
The first challenge was to figure out how to incorporate an eat-in dining space, more cabinet storage and more countertop surface. The existing radiator took up precious floor space, so we eliminated it and added an electric toe kick heater to replace it. This created space for one of the most charming additions to the space: the custom-built banquette, thoughfully designed to fullfill the homeowner's desire for integrated seating within the kitchen. The custom benches make this space feel as though it has always belonged, a testimate to the thoughtful design approach.
Rustic Elegance
Featuring classic Craftsman quarter-sawn oak and a warm stain, the cabinetry was a conerstone of our design. The custom door style and striking crown molding corbels add a sense of grandeur while offering ample closed storage. The design inspired by the home's original millwork ensures the space feels like an authentic extension of the home's history.
The deep charcoal hue and subtle veining of the honed soapstone countertops compliments the warm wood tones, while offering a period appropriate feel. The classic farmhouse sink and handmade tile add a tough of rustic elegance. The understated note of color and texture add visual interest without overwhelming the space.
The final touch was to install new oak flooring and refinish the main floor for a harmonious blend of old and new. The resulking kitchen respects its Craftsman roots while embracing modern living - a warm, functional space that will be cherished for generations to come.
